Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my crime? How have I wronged your father that he is trying to kill me?" "Never!" Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!" But David took an oath and said, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, Jonathan must know this or he will be grieved” Yet as surely as the LORD lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.” Jonathan said to David, “whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you”
1 Samuel 20:1-4
Jonathan said to David : "Go in PEACE, for we have sworn Friendship with each other in the name of the LORD, saying, “The LORD is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever...” 1 Samuel 20: 42
Meditation:
Jonathan and David's friendship was centered on God, which is probably why it was as loving as it was. Saul was Jonathan's father. The fact that his father wanted to kill his best friend put Jonathan in an awkward position. But he rose above it and chose to do right by his friend. Choosing to defend David was a very risky choice but Jonathan didn't care. He felt that their friendship was worth defending. When Saul was on the rampage, Jonathan was quick to go to David and inform him of his father's plans. This helped David escape Saul's murderous mission. When David had to flee from Saul's rage, he and Jonathan wept because they were not sure if they would ever see each other again. But they wished each other well and went their separate ways.
David held no resentment against Saul. He looked up to Saul. Saul's motives were inspired by jealousy. This is why you should never accommodate jealousy in your heart; it can lead to disastrous consequences.
Jonathan risked his life several times to protect David. Saul would have punished Jonathan severely if he discovered that Jonathan was assisting David. That did not scare Jonathan. To him, his friendship with David was worth the risk. Sometimes God talks to us through “True Friends”. Close friends that really love, and care about us…David and Jonathan had a “true friendship”. God spoke to David through Jonathan…
So remember: Even in the depth of your mess, God loves you and He will be there to pick you out of it, correct you, and show you the right way… We should strive to have friendships that are just as fulfilling as David and Jonathan’s. Friendships like this are not built overnight - and they do not fall from the sky. You need to commit your friendship to God, making Him the center of it so that in everything the two of you do, glorifies God! That is a friendship worth having!
