Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near..
James 5:7-8
Meditation:
There’s something beautifully counterintuitive about the way God grows things. We tend to celebrate what we can see—fruit, progress, breakthroughs, transformation. But Scripture often points our attention to what we can’t see. James 5:7–8 is one of those moments:
“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm…”
James invites us to look at the farmer not because farming is glamorous, but because it’s honest. It’s slow. It’s hidden. And it mirrors the way God works in us.
The Quiet Miracle of Underground Growth.
Before a seed ever breaks the surface, it breaks open...
Before roots ever strengthen, they struggle through dark soil...
Before anything becomes visible, everything essential happens in secret...
That’s the spiritual life...
We often assume that if we don’t see change, nothing is happening. But James reminds us that God’s work is often subterranean. He is forming patience, resilience, humility, trust, and character long before the “green shoot” appears...
The farmer doesn’t panic when the field looks barren. He knows growth is happening where eyes cannot see...
Why James Points Us to the Farmer.
James could have used any metaphor, but he chose one that teaches us three truths:
1. Growth takes time.
Spiritual maturity isn’t instant. God grows us through seasons, not shortcuts...
2. Growth requires surrender.
The farmer works the soil, but he cannot make it rain...
We practice obedience, but God brings the increase...
3. Growth is valuable.
James calls the crop “valuable” because what God grows in us—patience, faith, endurance—is worth the wait...
How We Live This Out Daily.
James isn’t just giving us a poetic image; he’s giving us a way to live.
1. Keep sowing even when you don’t see results
Pray again...
Show kindness again...
Choose forgiveness again...
These small acts are seeds. They matter more than you think.
2. Trust God with the unseen work
Just because you can’t measure progress doesn’t mean God isn’t moving. Roots grow before fruit shows.
3. Stand firm when impatience whispers.
James says, “Strengthen your hearts. "That means guarding your inner life—your thoughts, your hope, your focus—while you wait.
4. Embrace the season you’re in.
Some seasons are for planting...
Some for watering...
Some for waiting...
All are necessary.
The Beauty of Hidden Growth.
If you’re in a season where nothing seems to be happening, take heart. God does His best work in the soil of the unseen...
Your patience is not wasted. Your faithfulness is not forgotten. Your waiting is not empty...
Growth beneath the surface is still growth...
And in time—God’s time—the harvest will come!
Prayer:
Our Father in Heaven, hallowed your name! thank you for loving us and sowing in our heart spiritual seeds, guide us with your Holy Spirit, keeping focus in bring fruits; joyfully spreading the Gospel to all nations!
In Jesus' name, we Pray. Amen!
Jose Reyes.
