And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:8-14
Meditation:
On that day, a day that may have seemed like a regular day to other people, Jesus was born. He was born in a manger, a birthplace that would not be fitting for a King. But this was the start of something great - something new. The Savior had finally come to the earth and all the heavens were celebrating. An angel appeared to shepherds who were minding their flocks in the field, to announce the great thing which had happened - the Savior had been born.
The angel told them where they would find the child and they left immediately. When they reached the stable, in Bethlehem, they shared what they had experienced. The shepherds were filled with joy to see that the word of the Lord that they had been given was true. The shepherds left, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard.
This day was a major day for the world, even if they did not know it, because God's redemption plan was finally in motion. Jesus Christ, had come to fulfill the law, to die for our sins, and rise from the dead. He completed all His tasks, setting us free from the power of sin and the bondage of the enemy. All of this started from this small birth in a manger, that may have appeared to be an insignificant event but it was not.
We celebrate this day because of what it signifies, the birth of a new era. Salvation came to the earth through Jesus Christ and as children of God; we are all recipients of this precious gift. Now, it is our responsibility to pass on this good news to all who will hear, hoping that they will give their lives to Jesus Christ as well.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father thank you for loving us and giving us the greatest gift, a Savior named Jesus. Help us to continue spreading the good news of salvation to everyone. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
